CHERUBY is pleased to share the opening of Shuang Li’s exhibition Alliance at Kunsthalle Basel, featuring The Middle of the Day That Starts It All (2026), a new work co-commissioned by CHERUBY.
In Alliance, Li takes storm chasing as a point of departure, approaching the tornado as a metaphor for contemporary media environments. Streams of information, digital infrastructures, and algorithmic systems operate like weather systems—elusive, immersive, and difficult to control—continually shaping our perception, desires, and everyday experiences. Through moving images, meteorological maps, billboard-like works, and spatial interventions, the exhibition constructs an immersive landscape of circulation, instability, and perpetual motion.
One of Li’s most ambitious video installations to date, The Middle of the Day That Starts It All unfolds across thirteen screens, weaving together fragments of landscapes glimpsed from moving vehicles, passing environments, and scattered conversations into a continuous looping journey. Embedded within an architectural structure composed of drywall profiles and roadside guardrails, the installation evokes a road gradually losing stability—twisting, stretching, and carrying viewers into a shifting space between reality, media, and perception.
Across her practice, Li has consistently examined global circulation systems, media infrastructures, and the relationship between information and the body. Working across video, installation, websites, and performance, she investigates the hidden structures that underpin contemporary electronic landscapes and the ways they shape how we relate to the world and to one another.
Congratulations to Shuang Li, Kunsthalle Basel, and all collaborators involved in bringing this remarkable project to life.
